The Niles Block is Dead, Long Live the Niles Building!

The 1890 photo of Boston from the State House roof does not show the Niles Block, it is obscured by a building on the south side of School Street, possibly the Parker House hotel. The photo of the site in 1880 usually has a caption saying it is the Niles Building, but the current building on the site clearly has that name and the date of 1915 carved into it's side, so I doubt this is true. If you look at the 1880 photo, to the right of the right awning, there seems to be a sign over the door saying "Niles Block" and the doorway is marked as 33, which I presume means it was designated 33 School Street, instead of the current 27 School Street. There is writing above the "Niles Block" text, but unfortunately it cannot be made out. I believe the Niles Block and Ames Block ( and perhaps other buildings ) where demolished to make room for the current Niles Building.
